On a random day in May, I learnt that my application for a summer school programme held at Tianjin University had been accepted. I excitedly told my friends about the news, and they were exceedingly joyful for me.
Me: I'm going to China for summer school!
Paul: I hate China.
Chlo: Why ah?
B: WHY CHINA?
Gen: Actually, why ah?
I do have some memories of China. I think of the days in my youth when we'd travel in a tour group full of old people who liked wearing woollen socks with their sandals and always arrived first for the hotel breakfast. Beu and I also went on a China tour in Sec 1 - we laughed at the guy who had dandruff, quarreled over my grumpiness when it came to shopping, and she bought a sling bag that hung all the way to the middle of her shins.
Some things still haven't changed. The squat toilets without toilet paper are still there, the polluted air that caused breakouts is still causing a breakout, and the food arrives gleaming with a layer of oil thicker than the make-up on my ex vice principal's face.
But I love the perks. We're staying at a pretty decent hotel for 5 weeks (which means I don't have to make my bed or vacuum, yay!).

I like walking by the school lake every day on my way to school.
I love scouting for good food, which is aplenty! It's even better that we get to eat at restaurants with a good variety of dishes for $5 per person.

I like how Helen's bar decided that they were going to offer a free flow of rum and coke, gin and tonic, jagerbombs and bottles of beer to celebrate the end of the spring semester. Being cheapskates, we ended up not spending a single cent that night HAHA.
I like how the KTVs (ya la damn aunty) are cheap and high-tech (TOUCH SCREEN LEH).
I find it hilarious when people give out free donuts on the streets to promote the opening of their bakery down the street. It's even funnier because they do it in prom dresses from the '80s.
Readings and papers have been tiring, but this is really a heck of an experience. Great Wall and Forbidden City updates next time! (:
